MYS Blue Stripes 8 - 5 Dunbar Colts White (16May09)
Another week, another home game. This week we were denied Lennon’s services due to holidays.
We made a bright start with Ben, Jason & Keiron linking up well but failed to convert the chances we were creating. Owain, who was playing in midfield, showed his defensive qualities in tracking back to break up Dunbar’s attacks. Scott and Ethan looked quite comfortable in defence and Jamie our goalkeeper was making some great saves. However on one of Dunbar’s rare attacks, we first failed to clear the ball and then with the attacker having loads of time on the right hand side of the box, we then failed to close him down as he fired a shot across Jamie high into the right hand side of the net. It was a great finish from an acute angle, but we should have defended better and denied him the time and space. We continued to go forward and it wasn’t long before we fashioned an equaliser out of nothing. Jason who had picked up a knock early in the game and didn’t appear to be moving that freely, suddenly sprung to life and after collecting the ball outside the box, he showed some great individual skill to create the space to fire a great left foot shot high into keeper’s left hand top corner. This gave us the momentum to go on and quickly score another courtesy of Ben who was continuing to link well with Jason and this time he struck a powerful shot across the goalie to take a 2-1 lead into the first break.
At the beginning of the 2nd period, Jason went in goal, Cameron into middle of midfield and Brendan took over from Scott in defence. Quite quickly Dunbar drew level, this time courtesy of a break down their left, which left their attacker striding towards Jason and from again a very tight angle, they scored with a very precise shot which beat Jason at his near post. It was the power and accuracy of the shot high to Jason’s right hand side which beat him. However, disappointed as we were, it didn’t take long to re-establish our lead with Jamie showing a lot of composure in shielding a pass from Cameron with his body until he was ready to fire a great left foot shot across the keeper into the net. Cameron was bossing midfield and was linking well with Ben on the right and Owain on the left of midfield. Shortly afterwards we extended our lead courtesy of a pass from Ethan into Cameron’s path and his shot from outside the box was too powerful for the keeper to save. We were dominant in the second period as Brendan showed great strength in his defending and Owain always willing to track back and help the defence.
We made more changes at the end of the second period with Ben assuming the role of keeper, Cameron moving to right midfield, Jason to left midfield and Scott going into middle of midfield. We also put Keiron back up front as striker and it wasn’t long before he added another goal to his tally. This time as with Jamie earlier, he shielded the ball from the defence with his body and this allowed him time to set himself for the shot which beat the keeper at his near post. Just when we looked as though we would run away with the game, we were brought back to earth with a bump as Dunbar scored 2 quick goals, one of which was as a result of Ben trying to save a shot with his feet and instead of trapping the ball which he intended, the ball rebounded back into the path of a Dunbar player and his shot ended up in the net. This was simply a consequence of playing someone like Ben in an unfamiliar role. We were undeterred by this and still trying to play football. An example was a great flowing move involving Jason, Cameron and Scott whose pass to Keiron bounced off his foot and was cleared by the defender just as he was lining up his shot on goal. Just before the end of the third period Dunbar cut our lead to one as a result of a well worked team goal.
We have been in this position so many times recently going into the last period either drawing or as in this case only slightly ahead and I can only continue to be amazed by the desire shown by all the boys to go on and win the game. This final period proved to be no exception when Keiron displayed good strength to keep the defender at bay and retain possession, found Ben at the edge of the box and he confidently stroked the ball past the keeper into the net. With Ben now playing in centre midfield he was able to demonstrate the power he possesses by collecting the ball from Jason just inside their half and going on to unleash a ferocious shot from way outside the box which flew into the net. It really was screamer which no keeper would have saved. With Cameron proving to be an inspired keeper after having one of his better games in midfield, his prowess in goal seemed to be the catalyst for the team to play some great football in the last quarter. Apart from the control we had on the game, it was also evident how strong we still were even though most of the boys had played for at least 45 minutes.
The link up play and energy we displayed makes me think that the last quarter is as good as we have played as a team, with everyone making a great contribution, for a very long time if not ever.

KEIRON STRENGTHENS TRANENT SQUAD
MYS Blue Stripes 12 - 6 Tranent Juniors (9May09)
By playing our re-arranged game against Tranent Juniors, we had our third home game in as many weeks. During the first quarter we completely dominated the game and quickly established the lead courtesy of a shot from Keiron who collected a pass from Jason and fired the ball past the goalie. Shortly afterwards Jason’s corner from the left, which was delivered with pace, was unfortunately turned into his own net off the defender’s head. He was brave enough to try to clear the ball, it was just the ball struck the back of his head and flew past the keeper. It was all one way traffic as Owain extended our lead courtesy of a great shot across the goalie into the net with his stronger left foot after seeing his first attempt with his right foot being blocked by a defender. From a Tranent corner, Lennon won the ball and carried it up the pitch and whilst he admits that he was trying to pass the ball to Keiron, he misdirected the pass and it ended up being a shot which the goalie couldn’t hold and it ended up in the net. Just before the end of the first quarter, Keiron collected the ball outside the box and with the wind at his back he smashed a great shot past the keeper to end the period 5-0.
As Tranent only arrived with 7 players, Keiron who was going to be one of our subs for the second period, agreed to play for Tranent. Right from the start, they looked a completely different team and it wasn’t just down to having the extra man. The boy who had inadvertently scored the own goal, was now playing in midfield and he was to completely transform their team. His first contribution was to receive the ball from their kick off and go on a solo run which ended with his shooting past Jason. Whilst our tackling left a lot to be desired, it was his individual skill and determination that was rewarded with a goal. This stung us back into action and with Ethan playing as striker, he unselfishly past the ball to Ben and although his angle was much more acute, he drilled a shot past the goalie by restore our 5 goal advantage. Whilst I was taking the opportunity of playing boys in different and largely unfamiliar positions, we lost a couple of goals towards the end of the second quarter purely as a result of inexperienced defending. Our defenders were either caught on the wrong side or we were guilty of not clearing the ball properly. A positive from this period was seeing Scott who was playing in midfield spraying the ball around from the middle of the park.
Anyway the second period ended and with the score now 6-3, Keiron came back onto our side. We changed the team again and at the start of the third period, Tranent scored a good goal when the ball was drilled from midfield up to their striker who controlled the ball, turned and shot past Ben in what appeared to be one movement. However with Jason restored to left mid, he collected the ball in their half from the goalie’s clearance and ran the ball back to their goal unchallenged and comfortably put the ball in the net. Whilst we were dominant in this period and we created loads of chances for Cameron, Owain and Jason, their goalie was inspired and kept them in the game. We scored a good team goal courtesy of Cameron playing the ball into Owain who just cushioned the ball into Jason’s path for him to shot past the keeper. A simple yet very effective move. Their best player wasn’t finished yet and he was largely involved in a good move which they converted to make the score at the end of the third period 8-5.
At the beginning of the last period, Ethan scored his first goal for the team by ensuring that he was first to the ball after Owain’s shot was parried by the goalie for Ethan to turn into the net. Shortly afterwards we had a great sweeping counter attack move involving Ben, Owain and Jamie which saw Jamie just fail to convert the cross from Owain. With Keiron volunteering to play for them in the last quarter, it was an even contest albeit with Ben’s energy in centre mid, we were the team creating most of the chances. Indeed just after Tranent scored their 6th and last goal, which based on their efforts after the first period was totally deserved, Ben struck a great shot from way out the box into the net. His shot was all the more remarkable when you consider we were playing into the wind.
With Owain and Jamie linking up well together, Jamie was able to convert an intelligent cross from Owain which he curled around the defender with perfect weight into Jamie’s path. Jason and Jamie had further chances before Ethan finished off a great move which saw the goalie having to palm a great cross from Ben at his feet. It was another example of Ethan being in the right place at the right time and hopefully this gives him confidence to score loads more. It was also pleasing to see Ben deliver a great cross which caused so much difficulty for the goalie especially as this is something we have been working on in training.
We made loads of positional changes in this game and despite the problems they encountered in the second period, Cameron and Lennon defended really well in the third and last quarters. Brendan played well on both sides of defence and it is difficult to work out whether he is better on the right or left side.
Finally we came through a difficult spell in the 2nd period and ran out worthy winners. However Tranent played really well after the first quarter and big thanks has to go to Keiron for volunteering to play for them and making such a massive contribution to their team. It certainly made it a much more interesting and competitive game.

A CLOSE CALL AGAINST HADDINGTON

Last week we played Haddington Athletic Sky Blue at home, this week we hosted Haddington Athletic Clarets. Although Owain was absent through holidays, we started really brightly and with the wind at our back we pinned Haddington back in their own half. We had lots of possession in midfield with Ben, Cameron and Jason all playing there together for the first time with Lennon who was playing as striker, linking up well with them. It was following a period of good possession that we forced a corner which led to our first goal. Jason took the corner from the left and used the wind to his advantage by crossing the ball with good pace and direction which the goalie could only palm into his own net. Shortly afterwards, Cameron and Jason linked up well and with Ben in space, his shot from just outside the box was too good for the goalie and we doubled our lead. We looked very comfortable with Scott and Ethan doing a great job in defence, and we looked the team most likely to score. However our defensive frailties as a team surfaced again as from their goalie they managed to pass the ball up the pitch and score a very good goal. Whether it was complacency or a momentary lapse in concentration we had undone a lot of our good work in the first period. Jamie who started in goal had very little to do in the first period as from memory, this was Haddington’s only real attack.

However we lost 2 very quick goals in almost identical fashion, with the ball being played down the middle through our midfield and defence and Ethan ending up being one on one with the attacker. Both goals were poor goals for the team to lose as we simply didn’t defend well enough as a team. At this stage however from going 3-2 behind, we then dug deep as a team and although we were playing into the wind, we managed to restore our lead through goals from Keiron and Ben. Whilst Ben’s shot took a fortunate deflection and ended up dribbling over the line to allow us to end the second period 4-3, Keiron’s goal was as a result of a flowing move involving Jamie & Jason, expertly finished off courtesy of a great shot from Keiron. It truly was an action packed crazy 15 minute period which had everything. However all credit to the boys for digging deep and getting us back in the game.
The third period was relatively calm in comparison and despite having the advantage of the wind at our back Haddington scored the only goal to even up the score at 4-4 going into the last quarter.
We made the obligatory changes at the break and now despite playing into the wind, we completely dominated the last quarter and created loads of chances for Brendan, Cameron, Ben and Lennon. Scott and Jamie were very solid at the back and Keiron as our fourth goalie of the game had little to do. However it was only after we reintroduced Jason for Brendan that he scored the winner courtesy of some individual skill to beat a couple of defenders after collecting the ball just outside the box, and hitting an unstoppable shot high into the net.

YOUNGSTARS APPLY PRESSURE, BUT NO VICTORY
MYS Blue Stripes 2 - 2 Haddington Athletic Sky Blue (25Apr09)
We had our second home game of the season and it was to prove to be one of the most frustrating games we have ever been involved in. Once again the weather was very kind to us and this time we arrived with a full compliment of players.
After our last game against Pencaitland Blue, we started this game better and quickly started to create chances amongst which was Ben hitting the post from a good strike and Scott connecting with a shot from well outside the box which only just sailed over. As well as creating some good chances, we were also very solid at the back courtesy of Scott and Owain.
We started the second quarter really brightly and we created numerous chances for Keiron, Jason, Jamie and Owain, none of which were converted. Although we had changed the defence to Brendan and Ethan with Cameron going in goal, we remained very secure and denied Haddington any real opportunities. Somehow we managed to get to the end of the second quarter without a goal being scored, yet if this was a boxing match we would be miles ahead on points.
We continued to create chance after chance in the third quarter without finding the net and as a result of a quick breakaway from our corner, we found ourselves exposed at the back and Haddington opened the scoring courtesy of their striker running on past Scott, coolly drawing Jason from goal and playing it past him. We had been hit with a real sucker punch. However to our credit we continued to apply pressure and quickly afterwards we drew level following a shot from Lennon being parried into Ben’s path for a simple finish into the empty net.
You would think that we would learn, yet shortly into the last quarter Haddington scored another goal on the break this time ending up one on one with Keiron. Despite a valiant attempt at the save from a point blank shot, the ball agonisingly dribbled over the line to restore their lead. Thereafter for the rest of the game we created and failed to convert loads of chances for most of the team and with time marching on, we were grateful to a bit of individual skill from Jason who beat a couple of players as he cut inside from the left and fired a great shot past the keeper. After drawing level once more we should have gone on and won the game. However through a combination of good goalkeeping and squandered chances this was how the game finished.
It was a very exciting yet deeply frustrating game as on another day we would have won handsomely. We just need to apply some composure to our finishing and make sure all the good creative work is rewarded with a goal.

PUNISHED AT PENCAITLAND
Pencaitland Blue 7 - 4 MYS Blue Stripes (11Apr09)
Summer football has arrived. On a sparkling day we pitched up at Pencaitland with a squad of 8 as we were missing Brendan and Owain. In continuing to try and field a strong team over all 4 quarters, we started with Cameron in goal. However he was blameless as Pencaitland flew out the blocks and stunned us by scoring 4 goals before we had a chance to get in the game. Literally every attack yielded a goal and we found it really difficult to cope with their pace, strength and precise passing. When we had a chance to recover our composure we were able to pull one goal back before the end of the first quarter courtesy of Keiron whose shot the goalie tried to stop with his feet, only to miss the ball and give us some hope.
In the second period we started to play better and became the dominant team. However we were very wasteful in front of goal and whilst we missed numerous chances to reduce the deficit, we did pull one back courtesy of a good strike from Ben. Credit also needs to be given to their keeper who was truly inspired in this period. Just when you thought we could start to put them under pressure, we gave away a crazy goal from their only foray up field. From their kick in on one side we let the ball travel an inordinate distance across the pitch for one of their players to control and toe poke the ball past Keiron. Talk about a goal out of nothing when we had the numerical advantage in relation to more defenders than attackers.
Therefore we went into the third period 5-2 in arrears and with Ben now assuming the role of goalie, he was also doubling up as a makeshift sweeper when they threatened to cut through us again. We gave ourselves a chance following a great strike from Jamie to make the score 5-3. However we found it impossible to keep them at bay and shortly before the end of the quarter, they scored another well crafted goal. It was just rewards based on the pressure they had been applying. With Jason injured, Ethan went in goal and we again worked hard to limit them to one chance, however on this day it was all they required to put the game beyond us. All in all we were giving a lesson on letting the ball do the work, creating space to receive the ball and finishing the chances which are presented to you. We were also reminded that we need to get our heads in the game right from the start and compete.
Finally whilst it is right to play football in better weather to help develop skills, summer football with a limited squad and injuries presents a challenge for the players and if you discount the first quarter, we then drew the next 3 quarters 3-3. Therefore for this, all the boys deserve credit for their efforts.

Summer football has arrived. On a sparkling day we pitched up at Pencaitland with a squad of 8 as we were missing Brendan and Owain. In continuing to try and field a strong team over all 4 quarters, we started with Cameron in goal. However he was blameless as Pencaitland flew out the blocks and stunned us by scoring 4 goals before we had a chance to get in the game. Literally every attack yielded a goal and we found it really difficult to cope with their pace, strength and precise passing. When we had a chance to recover our composure we were able to pull one goal back before the end of the first quarter courtesy of Keiron whose shot the goalie tried to stop with his feet, only to miss the ball and give us some hope.
In the second period we started to play better and became the dominant team. However we were very wasteful in front of goal and whilst we missed numerous chances to reduce the deficit, we did pull one back courtesy of a good strike from Ben. Credit also needs to be given to their keeper who was truly inspired in this period. Just when you thought we could start to put them under pressure, we gave away a crazy goal from their only foray up field. From their kick in on one side we let the ball travel an inordinate distance across the pitch for one of their players to control and toe poke the ball past Keiron. Talk about a goal out of nothing when we had the numerical advantage in relation to more defenders than attackers.
Therefore we went into the third period 5-2 in arrears and with Ben now assuming the role of goalie, he was also doubling up as a makeshift sweeper when they threatened to cut through us again. We gave ourselves a chance following a great strike from Jamie to make the score 5-3. However we found it impossible to keep them at bay and shortly before the end of the quarter, they scored another well crafted goal. It was just rewards based on the pressure they had been applying. With Jason injured, Ethan went in goal and we again worked hard to limit them to one chance, however on this day it was all they required to put the game beyond us. VICTORY IN FIRST HOME GAME OF SEASON
MYS Blue Stripes 6 - 4 Dunbar Colts Black (28Mar09)
We had our first home game for months against Dunbar Colts Black, who have always given us very difficult games in the past. The weather was marginally better and we were blessed with some sun, however both teams still had to contend with the wind and cold.
Despite the conditions we made a very bright start and with the wind at our back, we quickly pressed Dunbar back in their own half. We created chances for Ben and Jason through good creative play from Lennon and Keiron. However we were to end the first period goalless, despite Ben running on to a huge clearance from Lennon and then dragging his shot past the post. It was a frustrating period as our dominant play deserved more.
We picked up where we left off at the beginning of the 2nd period and despite now playing into the wind, Ben had our first chance with a well struck shot which just narrowly flew over the bar. Then at last a goal to reward our play. Jason won the ball in midfield and played the ball to Lennon who controlled the ball perfectly and fired a great shot past their goalie. This seemed to give us the confidence to push on and it wasn’t long before we extended our lead courtesy of Ben who controlled the ball with both feet and then dispatched a great shot high into the net. It was his close control which mesmerised the Dunbar defence and allowed him to get his shot away before they could react.
Over the first two periods our defence in the form of Scott and Owain in the first period and then Brendan and Ethan in the second were really solid and we hardly allowed a Dunbar a strike on goal. Having said that Dunbar worked a very good goal shortly into the third period when what seemed like a hopeful ball forward was clinically finished with a great strike past Ben. If we needed a reminder as to how good Dunbar can be, this was it. However we reacted in a very positive way as from the resulting kick off, Jason played the ball into space for Cameron to run onto, control and hit a great shot high past their keeper into the net. Then from our next attack we extended our lead courtesy of a good pass from Cameron into Keiron who ran on and drilled the ball into the net. Just before the end of our best period of the game we scored our fifth, this time Jason won the ball in midfield, found himself able to run on into space and with the wind at his back, he hit a great shot which gave the keeper no chance.
We went into the last period comfortably ahead and in order to give everyone equal match time, we made changes which seemed to make no difference initially as from a corner by Keiron, Owain who was now playing centre mid, controlled the ball at the edge of the box, dragged the ball to his left to create space and then hit a low shot into the corner of the net. At 6-1, we looked very comfortable however whether it was tiredness or complacency, we then started to get over-run and it wasn’t long before Dunbar’s pressure was rewarded with a goal from a shot which seemed to move in the air and it gave Jason no chance. We then failed to clear a bouncing ball in our box from one of their many attacks, which was struck with such venom high into Jason’s right hand top corner. Whilst we could have done better clearing the ball from our box, you had to admire the shot which was unstoppable. Just before the end Dunbar scored their fourth which was just a result of the pressure they had been applying and was no more than they deserved.
For three-quarters of the game we played the best football we have played for a long time and whilst it was no surprise that Dunbar came back strongly in the last quarter, it doesn’t detract from what is an excellent result against one of the best teams in the league. Credit is given to ALL the players for their effort and determination as we continue to improve as the season progresses.

TRANENT HIT FOR SIX
Tranent Colts 4 - 6 MYS Blue Stripes (14Mar09)
We travelled to Tranent for our 2nd game of the season and were faced with another windy day, the only saving grace this week being the wind was across the pitch rather than behind, thereby offering no real advantage to either team.
However we could not blame the elements as Tranent quickly got into their stride, over-ran us in midfield and took the lead courtesy of a great shot past Cameron. This shook us into action and we gradually started to get into the game with some good link up play between Jason and Ben and Keiron and Ben. Our pressure quickly brought an equaliser from Jason collecting the ball in midfield and then beautifully disguising a reverse left foot pass into Ben who struck it first time past the keeper. Shortly afterwards Ben was able to intercept a clearance from their goalie and run on and finish to put us in the lead. We were now looking good with Scott and Ethan providing the defensive platform for Keiron, Jason and Lennon to take complete control of the game and allow Ben every opportunity to add to his already impressive goal tally for the season. Just before the end of the first period and just after Jason and Ben had shot wide, we scored a great team goal which started with Cameron feeding Ethan who in turn found Lennon. He carried the ball forward then picked out Ben who drilled home from just outside the safety zone to allow us to finish the first period 1-3. Another hat-trick for Ben, but more importantly we showed great character in coming back from losing an early goal.
We made some changes going into the 2nd quarter which saw Brendan and Jamie assume the defensive responsibilities and Owain replace Lennon. We also switched Cameron and Jason, however the changes did nothing to loosen our grip on the game and quickly Ben was able to add number 4, courtesy of Jamie robbing their defender and playing a great pass into Ben’s path for him to finish with style. We were creating lots of chances, the next one being a good pass from Brendan into Ben with his quick shot being deflected for a corner. Brendan and Jamie were showing that they were just as effective as Scott and Ethan and they were linking well as a defensive partnership and able to hold Tranent at bay. The midfield three of Keiron, Cameron and Owain were also linking well and it was Owain’s persistence which enabled him to rob the defender and play the ball to Ben who today only had eyes for goal and it was another great strike which took the score to 1-5. Shortly before the end of the 2nd quarter, Jamie set up Owain who hit a shot just over the bar.
More changes at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, but this time it really seemed to affect us. We seemed to take a long time to settle and as a result we quickly lost a soft goal with the ball being played through our midfield very easily and Scott and Ethan being over-ran. Despite a couple of great saves from Jamie, one in particular when he tipped the ball over the bar, we lost another goal when once again we seemed to be outnumbered in midfield and defence. It wasn’t obvious at the time what changes Tranent had made, suffice to say they were proving to be a real handful and whether we had become a bit complacent, they were clearly the team in the ascendancy and before long we lost another goal to take the score to 4-5.
The break couldn’t come quickly enough as it allowed us to re-group, make some further changes and break Tranent’s rhythm. We reintroduced Keiron, Cameron and Ben with Owain going in goal and whilst we were still living dangerously at the back, we were able to compete much better around the pitch. For the first time in what felt like a long while, we created a chance when Ben turned provider with Cameron shooting just wide. We continued to play the game in their half and it wasn’t long after we swapped Jason for Lennon, that Ben controlled a long pass from Jamie and played the ball into Jason who seemed to strike the ball with the outside of his right foot with his shot deceiving the keeper who probably thought the ball was going past but it sneaked just inside his right hand post. This gave us some breathing space again and allowed us to play out the rest of the game quite comfortably.
It is quite satisfying to see that when we are asked the question, we have the mental strength to respond and we clearly showed that we wanted to win the game. There is still much room for improvement particularly with our passing game, however I have to give them all a lot of credit for defeating a very capable Tranent team.
Finally, many thanks for the fantastic support and positive encouragement given to the all the players by our parents, which for the Blue Stripes is normal and I fully expect our behaviour to be rewarded with a spot in the last four of the Fair Play Cup.

NEW SEASON KICKS OFF WITH A WIN
North Berwick Colts 1 - 8 MYS Blue Stripes (7Mar09)
At the start of another season when the focus is on summer football, today’s weather bore absolutely no resemblance to summer. It was another cold windy day and it was clear that the team that had the wind behind them was always going to have the advantage.
Consequently we started with that advantage in the first period and quite quickly we had North Berwick pinned back as we applied all the pressure. From a Ben corner, Keiron headed over the bar. Shortly after Keiron drilled the ball home which was our reward after a number of shots from Ben and Jason had been blocked. When North Berwick did get out of their half, they were denied by solid defending from Scott and Owain. Shortly before the end of the first period Keiron put us further ahead by following up a shot from Ben which their goalie did really well to stop, but he could only parry into Keiron’s path, who had the easy task of side-footing into the empty net.
At the beginning of the 2nd period we switched goalies from Cameron who barely touched the ball to Jason, with Cameron assuming Jason’s position in middle of midfield. In addition we brought Brendan and Ethan on to replace Scott & Owain in defence. Ben and Keiron picked up where they left of with good link up play on the right hand side which saw Keiron shoot into the side netting. We were completely dominant by now and had shots from Cameron, Ben and Lennon all saved by an inspired goalie. However it was just a matter of time before Lennon and Cameron engineered a short corner which saw the ball drilled across by Cameron for Keiron to stroke the ball home to claim his first hat trick of the new season. Shortly afterwards Ben got our fourth with low shot past the keeper. At this point North Berwick brought on an extra player in an attempt to make it more of an even game. However, having got a taste for goal, Ben scored his 2nd and our fifth courtesy of a great strike with his right foot with flew into the goalie’s top right hand corner – a truly unstoppable shot. Just before the end of the 2nd period, North Berwick scored a well deserved goal from the only girl on the pitch. North Berwick were using their extra player to good advantage and when the ball broke to the girl just outside the box, she struck a great shot, which with the wind at her back, flew past Jason in goal.
At the beginning of the 3rd period when we were playing downwind again, we applied loads of pressure and had good link up play involving Ethan, Lennon, Brendan & Cameron, which saw shots from Jason and Owain being saved. For all the pressure, it took a great shot from Jason to register our only goal in this period and take the score to 6-1 at the end of the third period. With Ben our goalie in the third period and us playing downwind, his only touch was as a result of a good save.
Going into the last period we rested Cameron and Jason and gave Ben the responsibility of playmaker in middle of midfield. His link up play with Keiron on the right and Lennon on the left created chances which on another day would have seen Brendan open his account for this season. However Ben soon scored his third and our seventh when he collected the ball in midfield drove forward and unleashed another great strike past the keeper. Shortly before the end Keiron chalked up his fourth and our eighth after another flowing move involving Scott and Ben, which saw Keiron shoot the ball past their goalie.
After our outing against Dunbar last week when we were a bit ring rusty, we showed glimpses of our passing game and I’ve no doubt we will continue to make good progress in this area as the season progresses. I also think when we have the opportunity of being able to play a game in better weather, this will make a huge difference.
Finally, both sets of players deserve great credit for putting on such an enjoyable spectacle in pretty foul weather.
