TOUGH MATCH AT PENCAITLAND

Pencaitland White 4 - 5 MYS Blues Stripes (3May08)

After a goal feast last week it was evident from our early play that we thought it was going to be another fairly easy game. However the physical presence of Pencaitland proved to be very difficult to cope with and as a team we started very sluggish and as with other similar games, we quickly lost a goal when the ball bypassed our midfield and the strong running of their attacker drove him past our defence to fire past Jamie. This spurred us into action and our first real passing move saw Cameron win the ball in midfield and play an accurate pass forward for Jason Jarvis to run onto and shoot past the goalie.

At the start of the 2nd period, Brendan and Ethan came on and Cameron replaced Jamie in goal. We were still finding Pencaitland a handful and it was only down to the good defending of Brendan and Jamie that allowed us to remain level. However we were unable to contain them indefinitely and following a corner for us, they quickly broke and with minimal defensive cover, they shot past Cameron to restore their lead. Just before the end of the end of this period, Jason Grossart who by his own high standards was having a quieter game, pounced on his own shot which was blocked to fire past the goalie.

At the beginning of the third period, Keiron assumed the role of goalie and we made some tactical changes, one of which was to push Darrell up front as striker. However we were still having some difficulty coping with their direct play and it wasn’t long before we lost another fairly soft goal when we failed to clear the ball and Pencaitland fired the ball past Keiron.

We then started to show glimpses of our passing game and following a kick in from Jamie who found Jason Jarvis, he played a one-two with Cameron and then played the ball in from the left for Darrell to finish with a first time shot.

Just when we thought we could win the game in the last period, a slack clearance from defence was pounced on by their best player who had strayed forward from defence and struck the ball from outside the box past Keiron who was blameless.

This spurred us into action and we quickly drew level with Darrell playing the ball forward to Jason Jarvis who shot passed the goalie’s right hand. Sensing that the game was there to be won, we pressed forward and showed real determination when Cameron run in from the right and with his first shot being blocked, he shot past the keeper to win the game. This was a very patchy performance and whilst their passing is normally much better, they deserve a lot of credit for digging in and competing, and ultimately coming away with a win.

Teamsheet: Jamie, Scott, Jason Grossart, Cameron, Keiron, Jason Jarvis, Brendan, Ethan & Darrell. (Owain was injured but came along to support the team)

JARVIS BROTHERS ON FIRE

MYS Blue Stripes 10 - 1 North Berwick Eagles (19Apr08)

This was the first game for a number of weeks and with Jason Grossart agreeing to play for the Black Stripes this week, we were able to welcome Lewis Jarvis into the fold. In the first 15 minute period we started really brightly and quickly pressed North Berwick back into their half. It did not take long for us to score with good unselfish tracking back from Jason who was able to show brotherly intuition by playing the ball through for Lewis to go on and score our first goal with low shot past their keeper. Despite playing into a strong wind, we passed the ball around very well and shortly after the first goal, Lewis was able to return the compliment in picking up the ball in midfield and playing a pinpoint pass through to Jason to tuck away for number 2.

Number 3 was created from a quick throw in by Cameron to Lewis who was able to cut in and fire a left foot shot past their keeper. Number 4 was a good move which involved Keiron passing to Lewis who in-turn found Cameron whose shot was saved by the keeper only for Jason to turn it in. Our next goal, still in the first period when we were completely in control, was our best move of the game. It started with Jason playing to Lewis who returned the ball to Jason who then passed onto Cameron who in turn found Keiron in space to fire it home.

North Berwick only really had one chance in this half which they converted with a good shot past Owain. Just before the end of the first period, Lewis had a shot which struck the post and rebounded to Darrell who saw his shot hit the other post before it was cleared to safety.

The second period began the same way and it wasn’t long before Lewis who was now playing down-wind, fired a shot from outside the box which was deflected past the keeper. Our next goal involved a mazy run from Jason which he confidently finished with a low shot past the keeper. Number 8 was brought about by Jason cutting in from the right and delivering a good shot past the keeper with his left foot.

At the beginning of the third period Lewis went in goal and North Berwick introduced a very capable player who was to make a big difference over the remainder of the game. As a result the game was completely transformed and we were pinned back for most of the period. In actual fact, it was only due to a number of good saves from Lewis which kept the scores level in this period. We didn’t really create any chances in this period.

In the last period, Lewis was restored to midfield and quickly made it 9, when he cut out the goalie’s clearance and run forward before unleashing a great shot past the keeper. With the teams now much more even, we scored our last goal with a quick kick in from Ethan finding Cameron who turned and shot past the keeper.

All in all this was a very competent performance and whilst the score may have been different if North Berwick were at full strength from the start, I don’t think the result was ever in question. Finally whilst our scoring was dominated by Lewis, Jason, Keiron and Cameron, there was a lot of unglamorous work by Owain, Scott, Brendan, Ethan, Darrell and Jamie.

Teamsheet: Owain, Scott, Jamie, Lewis, Cameron, Keiron, Jason J, Brendan, Ethan & Darrell.
